Bad times at the el royale reparto

Where was bad times at the el royale filmed

Bad times at the El Royale, seven strangers with secrets to hide arrive at the El Royale hotel, where a fateful murder will occur. Watching it is great, being a movie that is almost dizzying with its love of pop culture, and its details are intriguing.

“Bad Times at the Royale may have a bit of a slow start and doesn’t quite realize the potential of its villain, but it’s a well-made, engrossing crime flick bolstered by several fine performances by its cast.”

A cult leader (Chris Hemsworth), a priest (Jeff Bridges), a vacuum cleaner salesman (Jon Hamm), a criminal (Dakota Johnson) and her younger sister (Cailee Spaeny), and a singer (Cynthia Erivo) stay at The Royale, a hotel between two states, which is no longer what it used to be. These seven strangers will take on identities that are not their own. But when the situation seemed that it couldn’t get any worse, everything will be dismantled when they discover the macabre secret that hides the lodging.

It takes place in 1969 in a hotel that was once famous and is now almost abandoned. It is run by a young concierge and a series of characters coincide there, such as a preacher, a soul singer, a salesman, a woman and her sister.  Many of them hide their true identities and purposes that will come to light in the following hours. The location also has many surprises. But the film itself also has a series of curiosities that are worth discovering (without spoilers, of course) to enjoy it more.

-The best place to get inspired.  Drew Goddard secluded himself in a hotel room to write the script and says it all started with his love of film noir, crime novels and classic choral films in which you locked several stars in a limited space and where you didn’t know for sure who the main character was.

-A very secret script.  The writing process was kept top secret and was only available to the studio’s top executives, who had to read it and then return it.  During the filming, some actors did not have the whole text, they were only given parts of it. The best example is that of Cynthia Erivo, who thought her character was very secondary and discovered that she was one of the main characters.

El rancho hotel movie 2018

Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo are the ones we spend the most time with, and they reward us by going all out to play two very interesting characters. Dakota Johnson and Cailee Spaeny (who plays her sister in the film), along with Lewis Pullman, are the youngest of the cast and they resolve their respective roles well. Jon Hamm has a very enjoyable obnoxious character, and finally Chris Hemsworth enters the scene when the film is already very advanced, but he gives us a character completely apart from the ones he has played so far.

The check-in scene, with Jon Hamm’s character as the common thread and master of ceremonies. As in a Christie novel, we are introduced to the heterogeneous and archetypal group of guests: the singer, the priest, the mysterious girl and the receptionist.

The cabin in the woods

The Royale, a hotel right in the middle of California and Nevada. Currently, it has only a few customers: father Daniel Flynn (Jeff Bridges), soul singer Darlene Sweet (Cynthia Erivo), traveling salesman Seymour “Laramie” Sullivan (Jon Hamm) and hippie Emily Summerspring (Dakota Johnson). All of them will be attended by the receptionist of the place, Miles Miller (Lewis Pullman). Gradually, the calm waters of Lake Tahoe on which the building is located will become embroiled in a series of events that will bring to light the secrets of each guest.

Although a good plot with an intelligible progress of the protagonists is something quite important when writing a film, the cast of actors has to be taken into account as well. The hotel guests previously named in the synopsis do a great job of playing and developing their characters, thus creating curiosity for the audience as the story progresses.  Cailee Spaeny (Pacific Rim: Insurrection, The Vice of Power) is another actress to note for her excellent performance as Rose Summerspring, correctly using the necessary facial expressions to imply her feelings.
