Banksy exit through the gift shop

Brainwash studio

Berlinale. His identity is a mystery, but his work is one of the most recognizable and innovative in contemporary art. We are talking about Banksy, the name by which the world’s most famous graffiti artist is known. His work, street, anonymous, spontaneous, is as critical as it is beautiful and full of humor. It is a symptom of the times we live in: weirdness, what they now call freakism, is more highly valued, much more so than talent. And that’s what Banksy, one of the most famous unknown artists in the world, wants to tell us about.

The graffiti artist from Bristol (UK) has become the greatest artist of his street…, and of any street in the world, although unknown, because, as expected, he did not appear at the festival (Berlinale) and if he did, nobody knew about it.

His film, Exit through the gift shop, tries to review the keys of graffiti and ironizes, as it could not be otherwise, about contemporary art. It begins with an interesting overview of some of the best graffiti artists in the world, but soon the action focuses on the figure of one Thierry Ghetta.

Exit through the gift shop film

Exit Through the Gift Shop is a 2010 British-American documentary film directed by Banksy, a famous street artist, in his film debut. The documentary caused controversy and sparked debate about the genuine reliability of the recorded events and also about its strict genre, as some critics argued that the film should be described and classified as a mockumentary.

The documentary stars Thierry Guetta, a French immigrant living in Los Angeles who has an extraordinary fondness for street art. The film shows the constant and different documentations that Guetta makes throughout the story. There, Guetta will try from finding an opportunity to meet his cousin, the urban artist nicknamed «Invader» to his introduction as a participant in between the different works of the street artists he admires, such as Shepard Fairey or Banksy, director of the documentary who has a fundamental participation in the film. Banksy’s anonymity in the film is preserved through the presence of dark shots that do not reveal his face (almost always covered with a hood), and the intentional alteration of his voice.

Banksy documentary

Hi Pilar, I really like Banksy’s work, I thought the film was good because one expects it to be about Banksy and his adventures as the masked graffiti artist, something like revealing to Gotham the identity of Batman and the address of the Batcave, I think? But instead we get the story of this nice french guy and how to go from a micro to a «macro art company» in one day and I really like the shots of INVADER, who I think is a great artist!(by the way, did you post the video of the rubic cubes?)Well I really liked the movie, I think it could also have been called «how to sell a 12 million dollar shark» hehehe :)Cheers!
