Pre-production on the film began shortly before the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean installment was released in summer 2011. Orlando Bloom and Adam Brown had already worked together on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), where they played Legolas and Ori respectively.

Geoff Zanelli, in charge of the film’s soundtrack, is the third composer to join the franchise after Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt. Zanelli had already worked in the saga as additional composer for films such as Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) or Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007).

The film was shot in various locations in Australia, such as the Whitsunday Islands and the Lennox Headland Reserve, as well as at Village Roadshow Studios. Additional photography was shot in Vancouver, Canada. Incidentally, this is the first film in the saga not to be shot in the Caribbean.

Javier Bardem is the villain of this film. Curiously, before him, his wife, Penelope Cruz, starred in one of the installments of this franchise: Pirates of the Caribbean. On Stranger Tides (2011).
