the last of us: secret ending of ellie & joel
Although it is not the first time that Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross talk about the ending of The Last of Us 2 and the possible changes that were shuffled, it is the first time that said denouement affects in some sense what could come in a hypothetical (and more than likely) third installment.
Ellie manages to cling to the memory of Joel to awaken what little humanity she has left and lets her rival throughout the game to rebuild her life. For her part, she decides to return to the farm with Dinah, and precisely what she finds there is what could have changed as well.
As Druckmann and Gross acknowledged in the Script Apart podcast, in the ending they had originally planned, the idea was that upon arriving at the farm and finding it empty, but instead of living the moment of Joel’s guitar, what we would do would be to cross paths with a toy of Dina’s baby that Ellie would keep in the backpack before leaving the farm.
The creators of The Last of Us 2 considered that this ending left a too closed approach for Ellie’s character, thus announcing that she was now going in search of Dina and the baby to join them. An ending -and continuation for the next game- that they did not even consider for the future of the franchise.

Naughty Dog has explained the alternate ending of The Last of Us that we recently told you about. To tell you about it, it’s necessary to mention different aspects of the plot, so we recommend you stop reading if you haven’t completed the game.
In the original plot of The Last of Us, Tess was going to be one of our main enemies alive, since Joel would have betrayed her and she would chase him throughout the game, until finally catching him.
Neil Druckmann, the studio’s creative director, explains that this didn’t work, as Tess would have to worry more about surviving than chasing someone for a betrayal, and that Ellie needed to be more involved in the fight, so it was changed early in development.
He also revealed that the next planned ending was the same as the one we all know, albeit expanded. Joel and Ellie would arrive in San Francisco, to an area where a group of people were trying to restore society, but that it was too easy an ending that didn’t suit him.

Tickets to the event were sold on the official PlayStation website, given the short amount of time Druckman had to rehearse with his team, the actors had to improvise on most scenes, including an unexpected alternate ending.
Druckmann introduced each cinematic scene, as well as providing a short story for each to give the audience, specifically those who had not played the game, an idea of when each scene occurred in the context of the story. Although he introduced the actors acting, he only did so after the first scene, that of Sarah and Joel at home before the outbreak. Due to time constraints regarding the acquisition of the actors, Druckmann arranged for actress Annie Wersching to stand in for the actors in certain scenes, establishing that “Tess has not magically come back to life.” They also had several images on screen to show each of the scenes as well, as most did not use many stills or props.
