Pitch black

I wish…I wish Valerian had been what I was looking for. It had all the elements to become the new Fifth Element, and it might even have been able to become a franchise that proved that European (and also specifically French-speaking) comics. However it is not up to such a task.

Worst of all, Valerian’s story is interesting, and the world created around it is lively and original, and it’s a shame that this is lost because of Luc Besson’s disastrous directorial work.

Lousy self-plagiarism, shameless. Luc Besson wants to emulate his acclaimed The Fifth Element, but he ends up giving us a terrible bodrio, a total disappointment, led by a teen couple with no chemistry. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne don’t even reach the heels of Multipass Milla Jovovich and Bruce Willis, a big point against it being a space adventure movie with romantic undertones.

“A space weirdness so paid for itself that it makes ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ look like an Ozu film (…) it’s like ‘Star Wars’ is up to its eyeballs in meth and it’s so crazy it almost manages to work.”

“‘Valerian’ manages to be groundbreaking and delightfully old-school. The kind of zany, inexhaustibly creative trip that only the director of ‘Lucy’ and ‘The Fifth Element’ can deliver.”

“For the first, intoxicating 30 minutes of the film, I couldn’t decide if what I was watching was brilliantly zany or totally goofy. Then, as the story progresses, it became clearer: Valerian is an epic mess.”
